The Eastern Shore Sanctuary and Education Center is the only sanctuary that accepts and rehabilitates roosters rescued from cockfighting operations. Unfortunately, we are able to accept only a small number of roosters at a time. We hope that publicity concerning our rehab practices will inspire other individuals and sanctuaries to offer homes to these abused birds. Please contact us if you would like to help fund our publication of a manual concerning the rehabilitation process.

Readings:

This wonderful Wall Street Journal article introduces some of the former fighters living at our sanctuary. Its brief description of the rehab process should not be misunderstood. We neither "punish" nor "lock up" the birds but, rather, keep them in time-limited protective custody so that they can learn to be less afraid of other birds. You can see a pdf of the article as it first appeared in the online Wall Street Journal or read the text as reprinted by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and other newspapers.

This Satya Magazine article by Eastern Shore Sanctuary cofounder Pattrice Jones introduces more of the roosters at our sanctuary and provides a more complete description of the rehabilitation process.

In this article published in the Abolitionist-Online, Pattrice Jones gives the most complete description of rooster rehabilitation and explains why we consider this to be a feminist project.

This Poultry Press article by Eastern Shore Sanctuary cofounder Pattrice Jones also discusses the rehabilitation process.
